Mentoring In Many Forms

I want to share about a meeting with a new client! It's an opportunity to highlight an aspect of our ministry to which we do not give enough attention. Ryan (name changed to provide confidentiality) came in this morning wanting assistance with what jobs are available and how to find them. His current job is out of town, not paying enough to cover the costs and keeping him away from his family.

Now I know what some might think - "There are jobs available everywhere. Why does anyone need to use the Job Resource Center?"

What happened during our 30 minutes together is one of the reasons I love my job and providing these needed services to our community!

Mentor

- an experienced and trusted adviser, also known as a coach, tutor, guide, counselor

Mentoring comes in all forms, but most importantly, it helps others on their path to achieving a goal using your knowledge and experience.

With 20 years of active listening experience, I guided Ryan through a conversation and asked strategic questions to find out what assistance the Christian Job Corps of Gillespie County could provide. The discussion was exactly what Ryan needed. He needed to talk out loud and receive some constructive feedback.

You see, Ryan is a self-described "jack of all trades" - willing to consider several different types of jobs. Contrary to some thought, being a jack of all trades makes the job of finding a job even more difficult.

Based on our conversation, we were able to find three jobs in which Ryan had a real interest. Our time together allowed Ryan to focus on his real interests and skills and to walk away with real possibilities and motivation.

Finding a job is a full-time job. Build confidence. Identify what job you want. Match skills. Gain new skills. Customize résumé or application for each. Represent yourself well.

Many do not have the skills or knowledge to do this on their own - especially those with low income, training and education. You and the Christian Job Corps of Gillespie County open new doors and provide hope!

Thank you for being a part of mentoring others in our community!
